Free encrypted remote online backup with Mozy

If you have a computer, (and you probably do since you're reading this!) chances are that you have some stuff on it that you wouldn't want to lose.
Things such as photographs are irreplaceable, unless you happen to have a time machine!
It can be a terrible experience to realise you've lost such a cherished record of your precious memories due to computer failure and lack of a backup of them.
One solution is to make backups to a compact disc, this can work, but discs have a habit of getting lost or scratched. If you use bad quality ones, they can sometimes just fail to work.
In the last few years, there has been the emergence of some online backup services, many you will have to pay for, but some are free. The quality of these services will vary a lot and some can be difficult or complicated to use. I've tried out a few and one that I can recommend is called Mozy.
You get 2GB of online storage for free. This is more than enough for most people. It's enough to backup hundreds of your photos.
But you can also upgrade to a paid option if you want unlimited storage.
Security:-
When using Mozy, the files are encrypted on your computer using very strong 448-bit Blowfish encryption and then uploaded to the Mozy servers using 128-bit SSL encryption. In other words, your data is extremely safe and never leaves your computer in any recognisable or usable form, ensuring your privacy and security when backing up to Mozy.
How it works:-
You use a small, easy to set, program from Mozy that allows you to backup specific folders in the background automatically. It also has the ability to Perform incremental backups, backing up only data that is new or changed since the last backup, making for faster backups.
How credible is it?
It's an award-winning online backup solution, as reviewed by such publications as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, BusinessWeek.com, Financial Times, Computer Shopper, PC Magazine and PC World.
Of course it never hurts to have an extra backup, so you could do the CD method and also this one, just in case, because you never know until its too late... don't say you weren't told now! Although this way is automatic and you can't forget to do it since there's nothing to do once its set!

I agree that Mozy is a great service but I think Carbonite has an edge. The price and features are about the same but I like carbonites inteface and remote access better and carbonite actually backs up files in the background when you're not using your computer instead of waitng for a set schedule. http://onlinebackupreporter.com/carbonite-online-b
